What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship combines work and study by mixing on the job training with classroom learning. Apprentices are employed to do a real job whilst studying, usually for one day a week either at a college or with a training provider.

The National Apprenticeship Service, provides information for parents, employers and young people, as well as how to search and apply for apprenticeships. It also has information about pay and conditions.

Information for parents

The following guide outlines information and benefits about apprenticeships as a key route into a successful career.

How much will I get paid?

The hourly rate for the minimum wage depends on your age and whether you’re an apprentice. Many employers pay above the minimum wage, particularly for Higher and Degree Apprenticeships.

What is a Traineeship?

Traineeships are an opportunity to gain real work experience, job skills and to improve English and Maths, if needed. The programme can last anywhere from six weeks to six months with the content tailored to young people’s individual needs.  Traineeships are designed to give young people the skills and experience that employers are looking for, and can help to boost career prospects with an apprenticeship or other employment in the future.  The employer does not have to pay a trainee, but some may pay their trainees a small amount.
